The story
Every day was a riddle everyone else had already solved.
She practised anyway, and got a little of it.
Every miss became a clue.
And she stopped holding back what makes her who she is:
The message behind it
THE WAY YOU RUN is for every child and every grown-up whose mind runs a different way. It shows the daily reality of living that way: the effort of reading a social world that seems to come naturally to others, the wish to be let in, and the quiet habit of making yourself smaller to fit.
The story doesn’t stop at “just be yourself,” because that advice alone leaves them without a map. Instead it shows a harder and more hopeful path:
Learn the world, a little every day
The rules can be learned without losing yourself. Saturn practices, reads the cues and calms herself by the fence. Learning the game is a skill, not a betrayal.
Choose your people
Self-worth comes first. Not only “Do they like me?” but “Do I like them?” Rosie sits beside Saturn before she has anything to offer. The real ones need nothing explained.
Bring what only you can see
Watch first, then offer what you notice in a way others can understand. The green branch is Saturn’s own way of seeing, and it is what makes the den stand.
Know your worth
Through it all, her father believes in her before the day begins and waits for her when it ends. Your worth was never part of the riddle.
The ending isn’t that the struggle disappears. Every day is another try.
But each day you get a little braver, and you stop holding back the thing that makes you you: the way you run
